Did smallpox cause stillbirths? Maternal smallpox infection, vaccination, and stillbirths in Sweden, 1780–1839

While there is strong evidence that maternal smallpox infection can cause foetal loss, it not clear whether infections were a demographically important of stillbirths historically. In this paper, we use parish-level data from the Swedish Tabellverket set for 1780–1839 to test effect on quantitatively, analysing periods before and after introduction vaccination in 1802. We find was major 1820, because most women contracted as children therefore susceptible during pregnancy. do small, statistically significant 1820 1839, when waning immunity put greater share pregnant at risk contracting smallpox. However, reduced prevalence period limited its impact stillbirths. Thus, an driver historical stillbirth trends.
